Breaking the Cycle of Pain. The connection between posture, alignment, and muscle tension

Chronic pain rarely starts where we feel it.

A tight neck, aching knees, persistent low-back pain, these are usually treated as isolated problems. Stretch the sore muscle. Strengthen the weak one. Adjust posture and hope for relief. Yet for many people, pain returns again and again, migrating through the body like a familiar loop.

What’s often overlooked is where these patterns begin.

The hands and feet, complex, elegant structures that account for more than half the bones in the human body, handle nearly all of our physical interaction with the world. They are our primary interface with gravity. 

The assumption that our hands and feet are beyond influence sits at the heart of the prevailing model of biomechanics. From an early age, without instruction, we flatten the bones of our hands and feet into two-dimensional platforms. We use our wrists and ankles like simple hinges. When we walk, we push backward into the ground with our feet like levers, relying heavily on large upper-leg muscles to propel us forward. This approach works well enough to get us through the day, but it comes at a cost.

Over time, this flattened, hinge-based strategy creates inefficiencies. It leaks into joints and soft tissue, where muscles are forced to brace, grip, and compensate. Tension builds not because the body is weak, but because it is being asked to solve a structural problem with muscular effort. Pain becomes the signal that something deeper is out of alignment.

Pain loses its reason to persist.

The Problem With “Good Posture”

The conventional approach to posture, what we might call the Standard Model, is largely two-dimensional. Feet are treated as flat platforms. Ankles and wrists behave like hinges. Alignment is defined by stillness: shoulders back, spine straight, weight evenly distributed.

This model assumes that if we hold the body in the right shape, pain will disappear. But the human body is not built to be held. It is built to move. 

When posture is treated as a fixed position rather than an adaptive process, muscles are forced to work overtime to maintain balance. Over time, this creates chronic tension, especially in the neck, hips, lower back, and feet, where muscles are constantly compensating for structural inefficiencies beneath them. 

Alignment Is Not Static. It’s Rotational

The Spiral Model of biomechanics offers a different lens. Instead of flattening the body into straight lines and hinges, it recognizes that human structure is inherently three-dimensional. The feet, hands, and joints are organized around spiral frameworks that rotate around central axes when they do work.

Each foot contains 26 bones arranged not as a rigid lever, but as a dynamic spiral that rolls inward with every step, like a cresting wave moving from heel to toe. This inward rotation does not collapse. It is how the body stores, transfers, and releases force efficiently.

How Poor Alignment Creates Muscle Tension

When the feet don’t spiral correctly, because of footwear, habit, injury, or learned movement patterns, the rotational signal that normally travels up the body is disrupted.

Instead of rotation:

  • Hips slide
  • Knees twist
  • The pelvis tilts
  • The spine stiffens
  • The neck tightens to keep the eyes level

Muscles that should be responding dynamically to movement are forced into static roles. They shorten to create artificial stability. This is where chronic muscle tension comes from, not from weakness, but from over-responsibility.

Pain as a Closed Loop

Once this compensation pattern sets in, it becomes self-reinforcing. Tight muscles restrict joint motion. Restricted joints disrupt alignment. Poor alignment increases muscular effort. Increased effort creates more tension, and eventually pain. Pain then changes how we move, reinforcing the original dysfunction. This is the cycle most people live in.

Breaking it requires more than stretching tight areas or strengthening weak ones. It requires restoring the body’s ability to organize itself around rotational symmetry, starting at the points where we meet the ground.

Gait: Where Alignment Becomes Action

Walking reveals everything. In the Standard Model, gait is driven by pushing backward with the foot like a lever and swinging the leg forward at the hip. This wastes energy and creates impact forces that the body must absorb.

In Spiral gait, movement emerges differently. As one foot rolls inward through its spiral, it pulls the opposite hip forward around the midline. Motion becomes cyclical rather than segmented. The center of mass glides smoothly instead of bouncing between steps. This rotational flow reduces the need for muscular bracing. Tension dissipates because force has somewhere to go.

Pain often fades, not because anything was “fixed,” but because the system no longer needs to protect itself.

Posture as an Outcome, Not a Goal

From the Spiral perspective, posture is not something you hold, it’s something that emerges. When the feet are organized, the hips rotate freely. When the hips rotate freely, the spine stacks itself. When the spine stacks itself, the head balances without effort. What looks like “good posture” is simply the absence of unnecessary tension.

This is why posture cues alone rarely work. Without restoring the underlying spiral mechanics, asking someone to “stand up straight” just adds another layer of muscular control.
